Why Choose Yale for Fellowship Training?

Yale Pediatric fellowship programs offer rigorous clinical training in our inpatient and ambulatory sites across the Yale-New Haven Health System. Fellows have the opportunity to work collaboratively with members of the multidisciplinary team to care for a diverse patient population over a wide spectrum of acuity levels. To complement the vast clinical exposure, fellows can individualize their scholarly activities and leverage the resources and opportunities at Yale, including renowned mentors specializing in a wide range of topics. Not only are fellows able to pursue scholarly projects in clinical and laboratory-based investigation, they can choose to pursue other areas of study, including public health, epidemiology, biomedical ethics, quality improvement/ patient safety (QI/PS), medical education/ simulation, global health, and bioinformatics. During fellowship, trainees can complete the requirements for a scholarly pathway (which exist in investigation, QI/PS, medical education, global health), or consider applying for an advanced degree program through Yale University. Our programs strike an excellent balance of offering a wealth of scholarly opportunities in a world-class academic center, while still providing personal attention, mentorship, and individualized support.

Scholarly Activity

All fellowship programs provide opportunities for fellows to train in laboratories in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, collaborating basic science or other clinical departments at Yale. Fellows may participate in clinical, translational, or basic science research. Scholarly activity may also be pursued in bioethics, medical education, quality improvement, public policy, and global health. In addition, we have a robust collaboration with the Yale School of Public Health.

Upon entering the research years, each fellow is provided with a Scholarship Oversight Committee, which meets at least twice a year to review research progress. The Yale Pediatric Fellows Conference and the Yale Pediatric Research Forum provide venues for the fellows to present and refine their work. Our fellows publish in peer-reviewed journals and present their research at national meetings.

Interested fellows are invited to enroll in our scholarly pathways, which were developed to offer focused training in one of four areas of concentration. These include: 1) Investigation (clinical and laboratory-based); 2) Quality Improvement/ Patient Safety; 3) Medical Education, and 4) Global Health. Trainees who meet all the requirements for a given pathway, including coursework, scholarly work, and networking/ mentoring, will earn a certificate.

How to Apply

Yale Pediatric Subspecialty Fellowship programs participate in the pediatric sub-specialties match. Early application is strongly recommended. All completed applications are reviewed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). In general, completed applications must have the following:

At least three letters of recommendation
A personal statement
Your medical school transcript
Your curriculum vitae
Medical School Performance Evaluation
Parts 1 & 2 of the USMLE, or equivalent scores
ECFMG Status Report (if foreign medical graduate)
Current photograph

To be eligible for a Yale pediatric fellowship program, you must meet the following requirements:

Completion of an ACGME approved pediatric residency program
Acceptability for CT licensure
Some programs may accept applicants on a Visa; specific questions should be directed to the subspecialty fellowship training program director
Applicants must register for the Match through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)

Interview Process

Invitations to interview typically be extended in late August. Interviews will take place from late August through November. Given the challenges presented by the current global pandemic, our programs will be planning to conduct interviews virtually for the current application season.

The interview process will differ across fellowship programs, but typically includes an introduction to our programs, interviews with program faculty, a “virtual” tour and meeting with current fellows.

Lindsay Johnston, MD, MEd
Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Neonatology); Associate Director, Fellowship Training Program in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Pediatrics; Director of Fellowships, Pediatrics
Following the completion of medical school and Pediatrics residency at the University of Pittsburgh, and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, I came to Yale where I am an Associate Professor on the Clinician-Educator track in the Division of Perinatal Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics. I am dedicated the education and training of fellows in the department, as the Director of Fellowships as well as the Associate Program Director for the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Training Program. I am also deeply committed to the education of trainees and medical staff in a variety of programs, many of which are simulation-based and interprofessional. Due to my desire to enhance my knowledge and skills as an educator, I completed a master's degree in Medical Education through the University of Cincinnati, the LEAD program through the Association of Pediatric Program Directors, and am a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator through the Society of Simulation in Healthcare. I am interested in educational research, particularly as it applies to procedural training, assessment of competency in the simulated and clinical environments, and curriculum development.

Thomas Murray, MD, PhD
Professor of Pediatrics (Infectious Disease); Associate Medical Director , Infection Prevention ; Affiliated Faculty , Yale Institute for Global Health; Interim Section Chief, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Pediatrics
Dr. Thomas Murray is a Professor at the Yale University School of Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics, Section of Infectious Disease where he serves as the Fellowship Director and the Associate Medical Director for Infection Prevention at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital. He is also the Medical Director of the Winchester Pediatric Tuberculosis Clinic. After receiving his MD and PhD from the University of Connecticut, he completed pediatric residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. He remained at Yale, completing fellowships in both pediatric infectious diseases and medical microbiology and returned to the faculty of the Yale Medical School in 2018. He studies infection prevention and disinfection in the healthcare and home environment as well as host pathogen interactions during pulmonary infections with an emphasis on children with Cystic Fibrosis

Pnina Weiss, MD, MHPE
Professor of Pediatrics (Pulmonary, Allergy, Immunology and Sleep Medicine); Medical Director, Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory; Vice Chair of Education, Department of Pediatrics
Dr Weiss practices both pulmonary and sleep medicine. She is medical director of the pediatric pulmonary function laboratory and oversees the pulmonary exercise testing program. She has published and lectured on exercise-induced asthma and sleep disorders in children. She has a strong interest in sleep in medical trainees. Dr Weiss is also very involved in medical education and research. She is Vice Chair for Education in the department of Pediatrics. She presently serves on the National Academy of Distinguished Educators in Pediatrics, and the executive boards of the Council of Pediatric Subspecialties and the Vice Chairs Executive Committee of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors. She is past president/chair of the Pediatric Pulmonary Training Directors Association and the Fellowship Directors Executive Committee of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors. She is editor of the American Academy of Pediatrics PREP Pulmonology. She is on the steering committee of the Subspecialty Pediatrics Investigators Network. She is involved in a number of national studies in fellowship education, including assessment using entrustable professional activities (EPAs), scholarly activity and financial resources.

Massima Lunato joined the Yale Pediatric Office of Education in March 2020. Before joining Yale, she held an administrative position at the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University. Prior to her administrative roles in higher education, Massima taught World Language in both private and public schools and she loves the world of academia. Outside of work, Massima is very busy with her 14-year-old daughter who is very active in lacrosse and dance. Her extended family lives abroad and so she travels frequently with her husband and daughter. Her passions include Roman history, pasta and very old Alfred Hitchcock movies.

Marion Miller
Manager of Pre-Clerkship Course Curriculum, Office of Curriculum
Marion Miller has been a part of the Department of Pediatrics for 5 1/2 years. Prior to joining Yale, she previously held positions in retail management and compliance operations. Marion has worked with the Pediatric fellows as the Pediatric Fellowship Coordinator before being promoted to the Project Manager in the Office of Education. In this role, Marion oversees the Clerkship, Grand Rounds, Residency and Fellowship coordinators. Marion loves working with an awesome team of program coordinators.Outside of work, Marion’s favorite pastime is spending time with her family. She also loves cooking, baking, traveling and painting. She’s also a self-proclaimed foodie and private chef to the stars (i.e. her children).
